Cheshire cheese predates all other English cheese and its heritage stretches back to Roman times its fame was sealed forever with a mention in the Doomsday Book a thousand years later.

During the 16th century, it was reputed to be the best cheese in Europe and was a firm favorite at the court of Elizabeth I. By the late 19th Century cheesemaking in Cheshire was prolific and local fairs in Whitchurch, Nantwich and Chester were the centres for trading. Whitchurch was the largest fair of them all it had been instituted in 1899 but was discontinued during the First World War.

The biggest weight offered for sale in any one day was 265 tons of Cheshire Cheese at the annual Dairy Show and Fair held in November. This represented a fine show of approximately 10000 cheeses.
